Venice Water Bus Guide

The Venice water bus (vaporetto) is the city's primary public transportation system, operated by ACTV. These motorized boats run on fixed routes throughout Venice's canals and to the lagoon islands. Our water bus map shows all the stops you need to navigate the city.

Water Bus Tips

• Always validate your ticket at the yellow machine before boarding
• Stand near the doors if getting off soon - boats can be crowded
• Front and back positions offer the best views
• Check the direction - same stop can have boats going opposite ways
• Download the ACTV app for real-time schedules

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy water bus tickets?
Tickets are available at ACTV ticket offices (main stops like Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia), automated machines at major stops, tobacco shops (tabacchi), and online through VeneziaUnica.it. The ACTV app also allows mobile ticket purchase.
Do children need water bus tickets?
Children under 6 travel free. Children 6-29 can get the Rolling Venice card (€6) which offers significant discounts on travel passes - for example, a 72-hour pass is only €33 instead of €45.
What happens if I don't validate my ticket?
Inspectors regularly check tickets on water buses. An unvalidated ticket is treated as no ticket, resulting in a fine of €60 plus the ticket cost. Always validate at the yellow readers before boarding!
How late do water buses run?
Regular service runs from around 5:00 AM to midnight. After that, the Night Line (N) operates with reduced frequency (every 30-60 minutes) until regular service resumes. The N line covers the main Grand Canal and lagoon routes.
